Despite getting mixed reviews from people who have visited Newquay, we thought we’d give it a go. The main shopping/eating area leaves a lot to be desired, a bit like Benidorm!
However, Fistral Beach is the main surfing place with plenty of shops surrounding it geared to water sports . As you walk down to the beach you pass the imposing Headland Hotel, previously used in filming for the James Bond film Die Another Day.
There is a pleasant level walk behind the hotel that takes you along the coastline leading back to the harbour, taking in the ancient Huer Hut. This used to be a dwelling for the lookout who was trying to spot shoals of pilchards. When they were spotted he used to ‘hue and cry’ to the boats in the harbour below, directing where the boats needed to be to catch the most fish.
A day is more than sufficient to explore Newquay, the coastline is beautiful and the harbour quite quaint but once seen you don’t need to go again!
