8th January Early ‘Spring Clean’

The New Year began with an early start!  Dean and I worked the morning with Mal & Ali covering the afternoon, so after cleaning we both had a shower and then fell asleep on the sofa all afternoon.

In the evening we were invited round to Malc & Ali’s where we ended up playing on their Wii.  We played a few rounds of golf, went water-skiing, ten-pin bowling and sky diving – all from the comfort of a caravan!  Also….without any alcohol in sight!

The next two days we looked after the campsite on our own as Malc and Ali went off to visit their new grandchild.  Dean ended up doing most of it (bar the cleaning) as I ended up a bit of a zombie – all that exercise nearly killed me so I doubt we’ll be buying a Wii anytime soon.

Tuesday was the first day off of the year and we used it wisely.  We’ve got loads of clothes still at Chris’ house so we went and sorted them out, after being treated to bacon sandwiches. Having been away for two years, it was the ideal time to go through them all and decide which ones to donate to charity – three black bin liners later we’ve still got loads of clothes left in the spare room.

Chris fed us in the evening and loaded us up with dinner for Wednesday.  We gave the ‘van a thorough clean, with Dean going up the ladder and cleaning all the leaves off the roof.  As it is a brand new year we’re now in the mind-set of getting ready to leave to go to Hereford.

Thursday we went into Oxford to spend some vouchers we were given for Christmas and treated ourselves to breakfast in ‘George and Davis’ on St Aldates.  We then spent a leisurely couple of hours wandering round town, ending up in a visit to the Marks & Spencer Food Hall for dinner.

Saturday we invited Malc, Ali and Woody round for something to drink and it ended up being a great night.  They realised why we don’t invite too many people round as the ‘van is so small…and with a greyhound taking up most of one seat Malc nearly ended up sitting on the floor!  Ali bought round the Winter Pimms and Apple Juice and we baked a whole Camembert cheese, served with carrots, celery and cucumber slices….a nod to a healthy 2011…

About Dean

Angela and I decided that there was more to life than working hard to keep up the payments on the mortgage, to pay the gas, electric, phone bills etc. etc. SO............ In 2008 we sold our house, I initially took a year off (Unpaid) and Angela handed in her notice! We bought a motorhome and set off for a year of travelling! This was the best thing we had done in our lives (Apart from getting married) and we have no regrets. During the year I managed to secure a redundancy package which felt very strange. Almost sad as I had worked for the same company for 19 years (BT). It was always our plan to have a whole year off before thinking about the 'W' word. We began applying to the Camping and Caravanning Club (CCC) for the position of Holiday site assistants in August 2009. After the interview, work experience and induction we were finally given a contract at the CCC site in Inverewe (Scotland). Our plan is to work through the summer in the UK then head to Europe to overwinter before coming back to work the following summer season. Hopefully these few words and our blog will inspire others to get off the hamsters wheel and see that there is more to live than having a house and material things. A cliche I know but this is not a rehearsal, life is too short!!! Since our first contract in Scotland we have worked a winter contract in Oxford (never again!) not Oxford but a winter contract. Hereford for two years, living in a yurt for one! And Cornwall. In between our working we have also travelled a bit. Hopefully this website will give you an insight into our alternative lifestyle. Get out there and live the dream!
